Barrel Oak Hotel, Restaurant and Event Center

The owner of the Barrel Oak Winery submitted plans in 2019 to Fauquier County to build a hotel, restaurant, and event center on 50 acres of land adjacent to the existing winery.  CFFC was very active in leading the effort to oppose the project on very sound grounds. The proposed development was completely inconsistent with the zoning for this rural/agricultural location and at odds with the service district strategy that the county has employed for decades to limit commercial development including restaurants and hotels to certain locations in the county where infrastructure already exists.  This strategy is also a key part of the county’s plan to help preserve open space.

Several members of the CFFC board were directly involved in the opposition effort and the organization contributed to the costs of hiring a land-use attorney.  CFFC also advocated against the project publicly.  The owner withdrew the application for the development after it appeared unlikely that the county board of supervisors would approve it.
