JOINT AWARD

This Honors Internship and accompanying Academic Scholarship will be granted by CFFC to a member of the senior class who has been actively involved in community service, emphasizing the protection and preservation of natural, agricultural and/or historic resources within the school environment or within the county generally. During the year, the recipient will be given the opportunity to participate in CFFC projects and work as an intern with conservation and planning professionals. The student will also be invited to attend one or more of the organization’s monthly Board of Directors' meetings. The related scholarship will be in the amount of $1,000. The winner will be announced at the beginning of the year and the funds will be awarded at the end of the student’s Senior year internship, prior to college.

Two Intern Scholarships will be granted. Students will be selected from among the senior classes of Fauquier County Public Schools. This application and all accompanying materials must be returned to the respective high school Career Center not later than Noon on September 30, 2010.  Applications may be handwritten or filled out electronically.

Background

CFFC established the Sally Kahn Memorial Scholarship in October, 1988 and presented its first award to a graduating high school senior in Fauquier County in 1989. Sally Kahn was the Fauquier county representative for the Piedmont Environmental Council, focusing on our county's land use issues. Ms. Kahn was a valued friend of CFFC and worked tirelessly for the organization and the county.

In 2007 CFFC initiated the Kitty Smith Internship in the name of Dr. Katherine (Kitty) Smith.  Dr. Smith, a former research scientist with the National Institutes of Health, later became a key employee of the Piedmont Environmental Council focused on Fauquier County land use issues.  “Kitty” served CFFC for many years as Land Use Advisor to the Board of Directors. Over her many years of advocacy, "Kitty" continues to be a wellspring of information to new and veteran volunteers alike providing support to CFFC as a volunteer advisor.
