Initial meeting for bacteria control Implementation Plan for Browns, Craig, and Marsh Run was held on 4 May 2010 -  The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ),  and Rappahannock Rapidan Regional Commission (RRRC) hosted this meeting to obtain input and participation from citizens and property owners to develop a bacterial control Implementation Plan for sections of Browns, Craig, and Marsh Run in Southern Fauquier County.  The map above highlights the sections of these runs under discussion.

Approximately 75 individuals attended this event, including Supervisors Chester Stribling and Terry Nyhous.   After opening remarks by Supervisor Stribling, a briefing explaining the role of a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Implementation Plan (IP) to control bacteria in waterways was presented.  Fact sheets were handed out to participants which explained why a TMDL IP was need for sections of Browns, Craig, and Marsh runs where high bacterial counts had been recorded.

Following the presentations participants, half of which were farm property owners, split into Agricultural and Residential working groups. Each Working Group will address the sources of bacteria that can be attributed to the environment and operations they represent. The groups will focus on identifying obstacles to implementation of best management practices to reduce bacteria coming from agricultural or residential operations, and practical solutions to these obstacles.  Each working group will report their ideas and recommendations to a steering committee for consideration to be included in the implementation plan. Strong public participation in these groups ensures that the final implementation plan reflects local concerns and ideas with regard to water quality.

You can access copies of the presentation and fact sheets used at the initial meeting and follow the progress of the Working Groups and Steering Committee at the RRRC website.
